This high-altitude destination lies 13 miles north of Bayfield and 18 miles northeast of Durango, offering convenient access with breathtaking views. The area holds deep cultural significance as ancestral land of the Ute people. Known for its outdoor recreation, Vallecito Lake is a prime base for fishing, boating, hiking, and exploring the natural and cultural attractions of the surrounding Four Corners region.
Real Estate on Vallecito Lake
The sky's really the limit here. There are lakefront homes, lots, recreational parcels, lots with dozens of acres, large homes and small, mountain cabins. It really is a hodge podge of real estate perfect for so many different buyers!

Vallecito, while technically in Bayfield, can sometimes be lumped in with Durango, but that's still 18 miles southwest of the lake. Driving it takes about 30 minutes.
Vallecito Lake & Recreation
While you can swim in the lake, it's best known for boating and fishing. Just keep in mind that the water stays cold year-round due to the lake’s high elevation, so be prepared for chilly temperatures.
Rivers & Creeks
Vallecito Lake is fed by several scenic waterways, including the Pine (Los Pinos) River, Freeman Creek, Vallecito Creek, and a network of smaller creeks—perfect for anglers, hikers, and nature lovers.
Winter Recreation
Vallecito transforms into a winter playground with options like:
- Cross-country skiing on groomed and ungroomed trails
- Snowshoeing on scenic routes
- Dog sledding adventures
- Snowmobiling and snow biking on Middle Mountain
Boating
At over 8,000 feet, Vallecito Lake is the largest lake of its elevation in Colorado. Surrounded by dramatic views of the Weminuche Wilderness and 12,000–13,000 ft peaks, boating here is a unique alpine experience. The boat ramp is typically open from May through October.
Vallecito Marina

The Tour of Carvings
This self-guided tour honors the 2002 Missionary Ridge Fire. Local artist Chad Haspels carved towering memorials—each up to 18 feet tall and weighing 2,600 pounds—from fallen Ponderosa pines. Numbered and named carvings are placed throughout the lake area for easy exploration.

Fishing
The reservoir offers accessible shoreline and boat fishing for rainbow trout, brown trout, and northern pike. Spring and early summer are ideal for pike fishing, especially from mid-May to mid-June.
Horseback Riding
Enjoy the mountain views on horseback with options for hourly rides, full-day excursions, breakfast rides, fall color tours, and multi-day backcountry trips.
Hunting
Bordering the Weminuche Wilderness—Colorado’s largest wilderness area with over 500,000 acres and 500 miles of trails—Vallecito is a top destination for elk, mule deer, turkey, and bear hunting.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Pine River Surf Co. offers paddleboard rentals for a fun, full-body workout on the calm lake or nearby waterways.
Vallecito Schools
Residence with school-aged students are served by the Bayfield school district and are assigned to the Bayfield Elementary School, the Bayfield Middle School, and the Bayfield high School. Depending on which home you choose, these schools could be anywhere from 16 miles to 5 miles away. The schools are located at the South End of the lake, more towards town, so those who live north of the lake have a little bit more of a commute to the schools.
