About Mancos, Colorado

First founded in 1894, Mancos was the site where early Spanish explorers first crossed the Mancos River and the commercial center for East Montezuma County. It was once the county seat but the valley itself has been settled since at least the 10th century A.D. It was incorporated in 1894 and was known as one of the hottest places in the area. Construction and infrastructure built up over the next 10 to 20 years and the establishment of the Mesa Verde National Park encouraged a lot of the early growth of the town.
Many sites in Mancos are listed on the state and National Register of Historic Places. The Bauer Bank Building (shown) is one of the oldest surviving masonry buildings in the Valley. The Mancos High School was built in 1909 and was the first high school in the county. The Mancos Opera House was completed in 1910 and the Wrightsman House, built in 1903, is a beautiful landmark of the city.

Nestled along Highway 160, this small community has a surprising number of events, activities, and services. There is the Chicken Creek Cross-country Ski Area, Cottonwood Park, multiple shops, restaurants, great coffee houses, art galleries and museums, the Mancos Brewing Company, and the community center. The Mancos community center offers classes, exercise venues, parks and trail guides, and venue rental facilities at any one of the five parks in Mancos.

The Mancos School District serves the entire area with an elementary school, middle school, high school, and an early learning center. The Mancos high school receives high marks for academics, diversity, teacher to student ratio, clubs and activities and college prep.
