The picturesque town of Dolores sits nestled in a canyon with the famed Dolores River cutting along one side and rock clicks on the other. With the second-largest reservoir in the state, McPhee Reservoir, the area is an attraction for water sports. And, with the San Juan National Forest only one mile away, an outdoor enthusiast’s wonderland.
The quaint downtown offers up a unique mixture of shops, restaurant, taverns, a local brewpub and cidery. 4 beautiful town parks, a state-of-the-art public library, and a peaceful bike trail make Dolores an incredibly comfortable place to call home.
Dolores, Colorado, is a small town along Highway 145 home to about 900 residents. It is considered a "Statutory Town," which means it's a municipality, corporation, or notified town area committee subject to state statutes and limitations. While it is its own little community, it has a range of powers by state law to address the needs of citizens, including its own administrative, police, and financial powers.
Spanish for "sorrows", Dolores's name for the river in which it's located. Nestled at the mouth of the Dolores Valley and the upper reaches of the McPhee reservoir, Dolores is approximately 40 miles from the For Corners Monument. It was a station on the Rio Grande Southern Railway and is currently part of Colorado's Bustang network and intercity bus service throughout the state, traveling between Denver, Colorado Springs, Durango, Grand Junction, and many other California hotspots.
Dolores has its own Dolores school district, with the Teddy Bear Preschool, Dolores Elementary, and the Dolores Secondary which is both middle school and high school.
Dolores is known for its Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum, the McPhee Reservoir, and the Geiser Spring Trail. The reservoir, located in Montezuma County, is part of the Dolores Project, and currently dams the Dolores River to provide irrigation and municipal water for Montezuma and Dolores counties. It also provides water for the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reservation.
The Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum (pictured) is Southwest Colorado's unique archaeological Museum with permanent and temporary exhibits that focus on Ancestral Puebloan, Native American, and historic cultures in the Four Corners region.
The Geyser Spring Trail or Trail at 648, crosses the West Dolores River via a footbridge and raises approximately 500 feet in elevation from beginning to end. This is a beautiful trail that ends with a small pool fed by the only true geyser in the state of Colorado. You can even see it erupt about every 30 or 40 minutes. The temperature the Springs is typically around 82° but swimming and bathing are not recommended. However, it is a fun one point Three Mile Trl. and a fun thing to do when you live or visit Dolores.
